This season has been filled with turmoil for the Nets. The losses have piled up, they have been ravaged by injuries, they've had a coaching change, and they've had poor chemistry on the court. They've been the butt of many jokes this season. However, there is reason to believe that this team may be doing the laughing as soon as next season.
The Nets' 2009-2010 Season
The season got off to a historically bad start for the Nets as they set an NBA record with 18 consecutive losses out of the blocks. Injuries were a big reason for that as they only dressed 8 or 9 players for many of those games. The losses eventually cost head coach Lawrence Frank his job. The team lost every conceivable may possible, close games, blowouts, you name it. They just haven't been able to put a full 48 minutes together very often. The statistics are embarrassing. They rank dead last in the NBA in scoring at a paultry 90.2 points per game. Their defense isn't much better. They allow teams to shoot .477%, third worst in the league. Their point differential is a -10.8 per game, worst in the league. They haven't gotten much from their veteran players. So, given all that, why is there reason for optimism?
The Nets' Young Players
The main reason for optimism is that the Nets have a very nice nucleus of young players. Brook Lopez has been the biggest bright spot for the team this season. He has averaged 18.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He is also seventh in the league in blocks at just over 2 per game. His numbers warrant consideration for the All-Star team, though it is doubtful he will make it with the team's dreadful record. Another reason for optimism is Devin Harris. Harris made the All-Star team last year and appeared headed for greatness. He has been slowed by injuries this year and hasn't shown the same explosiveness he did last year. The hope is that once he is completely 100%, he will return to his former All-Star level. Second year pro Chris Douglas-Roberts has made great strides this year and is averaging over 16 points per game. Yi Jianlian made his return recently from a long layoff and has provided a spark. He, too is averaging over 16 points per game and playing the best ball of his career. So, the Nets have four very nice pieces they can build around as long as they can keep them all healthy.
